Summer beaches are packed, but Sokcho in late November feels different: cold, clear air and an almost empty shoreline. This route runs from a seaside pavilion to a hand-pulled ferry, a seafront Ferris wheel at sunset and a tower with night views, and it all fits on foot or in short taxi rides.
Quick facts
- From Seoul: about 2.5 hours by express bus from Seoul to Sokcho
- Sunset in late November: a little after 17:00
- Where to stay: near Sokcho Beach or Cheongcho Lake, where the Ferris wheel and tower are within walking distance
- Dress: sea wind is very cold; bring a scarf and gloves
Day: Yeonggeumjeong Pavilion
Start at the end of the Sokcho Port breakwater, where Yeonggeumjeong pavilion sits above the rocks. Waves crash below, and the sound is said to resemble a geomungo (a Korean zither), which gave the spot its name. It's free to visit. Come early for sunrise, or about 30 minutes before sunset. If you're staying overnight, a return sunrise visit the next morning is lovely.
Afternoon: Abai Village ferry and Sokcho Market
Cross to Abai Village on a "gaetbae", a small barge pulled across the channel along a cable by hand. A round trip costs about 500 won, and the crossing takes roughly 30 seconds. It's short, but fun to pull the rope together.
Then head to Sokcho Tourist and Fisheries Market for snacks: dakgangjeong (sweet crunchy fried chicken), squid sundae and fried shrimp. The chicken can sell out late in the afternoon, so go before the evening.
Sunset: Sokcho Eye Ferris Wheel
The highlight of the day sits right beside Sokcho Beach.
- Address: 2 Cheongho-haean-gil, Sokcho (Korean: 강원 속초시 청호해안길 2)
- Hours: daily 10:00–20:00
- Fare: adults 12,000 won · children 6,000 won
- Ride time: about 15 minutes
- Parking: Sokcho Beach public lots 1 and 2
With sunset a little after 17:00, board at about 16:30–17:00 to see sea in daylight, then the glow. After dark the wheel lights up in LED colors and looks lovely from the beach too. Weekend sunset queues are possible, so go a bit early.
Night: Sokcho Expo Tower and Cheongcho Lake
After dinner, walk toward Cheongcho Lake, where the tower stays open late.
- Address: 72 Expo-ro, Sokcho (Korean: 강원 속초시 엑스포로 72)
- Hours: 09:00–22:00, last entry 21:30; open every day
- Admission: adults 2,500 won · teens 2,000 won
- Parking: free for 2 hours
The 73.4 m observation deck looks over the sea, the lake and, on clear days, toward Seoraksan mountain. The elevator has a transparent window partway up, handy for photos. Finish with a slow walk around the lakeside path.
Dinner: winter seafood
November and December are the season for doroemuk (sea bass–like fish stewed in spicy broth) and yangmiri (sand lance, usually grilled) in Sokcho. A local festival for these fish has opened around November 7–8 in recent years. Weekend evenings at atmospheric restaurants and sea-view cafés can have waits, so book ahead where possible.
Tips for foreign travelers
- Use Naver Map or KakaoMap; show the Korean names to taxi drivers (영금정, 속초아이, 속초 엑스포타워).
- Bring some cash for the ferry and market stalls.
- Remember the order: sunset on the Ferris wheel, night view from the tower.
- Check sokchotour.com or call the Expo Tower (033-637-5083) for the latest hours.
Summary
Pavilion, ferry, market, Ferris wheel and tower: Sokcho's winter sea date flows smoothly from day to night, with seasonal seafood to finish.
