If you want a Korean date with fewer crowds and more slow walking, Andong is a great pick. By day you wander the thatched-roof lanes of a 600-year-old village on a river bend; at dusk you look down on it from a cliff; at night you cross a long wooden bridge lit over the water. By late November the leaves are mostly gone and the town is calm, which suits a quiet trip for two.
Quick facts
- From Seoul: roughly 2.5–3 hours by KTX-Eum train from Cheongnyangni or by express bus. Hahoe Village is about 40 minutes from the town center, so a taxi or rental car helps.
- Sunset in late November: around 17:20
- Best for: couples who like quiet walks, photography and traditional food
- Crowds: The autumn World Heritage Festival ended on October 25, so late November is much calmer.
1. Day: Hahoe Folk Village
A UNESCO World Heritage site, Hahoe gets its name ("river wraps around") because the Nakdong River curves around the village in an S shape. The lanes are narrow, lined with stone walls, thatched cottages and tiled mansions, perfect for walking hand in hand.
- Address: 186-8 Jeonseo-ro, Pungcheon-myeon, Andong (Korean: 경북 안동시 풍천면 전서로 186-8)
- Winter hours (Oct–Mar): 09:00–17:00, last entry 16:30; open every day
- Admission: adults 5,000 won · teens 2,500 won · children 1,500 won
- Parking: free
- Time needed: about 1.5 hours
The village closes at 17:00 in winter, so go in the morning or early afternoon. Arriving near the 9 AM opening gives you the lanes almost to yourselves; weekend lunchtime is the busiest. Don't miss the pine grove along the river.
2. Sunset: Buyongdae Cliff
Across the river from the village rises Buyongdae, a cliff about 64 m high. From the top you can see the river wrapping around the whole village at once, which is the classic Hahoe photo and the most popular couple spot here.
- You can't walk straight across from inside the village; you'll need to go around by car or taxi.
- Aim to be at the viewpoint a little before sunset, around 16:30–17:00 in late November.
3. Night: Woryeonggyo Bridge
Woryeonggyo is a long wooden footbridge across the river below Andong Dam, and it's most beautiful after dark, when the lights reflect on the water. Andong has been developing this riverside area as a night-tourism zone, with a floating stage, bridge lighting and media-façade projects in progress, though what runs in November is worth checking.
- Getting there from Hahoe: about 40 minutes by car or taxi
- Fountain: usually a summer feature, so it may not run in November
- Tip: rest a moment in the pavilion (Woryeongjeong) in the middle of the bridge.
The bridge is busiest right after sunset. Have dinner first and walk it a bit later for a calmer stroll. River wind is sharp in winter, so bring gloves and a hand warmer each.
Where to eat
Andong's signature dish is jjimdak, braised chicken with glass noodles and soy sauce, and the old market area has a street of restaurants dedicated to it. Portions are big; ask whether a half order is enough for two. Near Woryeonggyo you'll also find restaurants serving heotjesabap, a ceremonial-style rice bowl with seasoned vegetables. Check recent review dates before you go, as prices and hours vary by shop.
A simple one-day plan
- 11:00 Arrive at Hahoe Village, lane walk (1.5 hours)
- 12:30 Lunch near the village
- 14:00 Café in downtown Andong
- 16:30 Buyongdae at sunset (or head straight to the bridge)
- 18:00 Jjimdak dinner
- 19:30 Walk across Woryeonggyo Bridge
This is tight for one day, so consider staying overnight. Hanok guesthouses near Woryeonggyo exist.
Tips for foreign travelers
- Public transport to Hahoe is limited. Taxis or a rental car are much easier; if driving, you need an International Driving Permit.
- Show the Korean names to taxi drivers: 하회마을, 부용대, 월영교.
- Use Naver Map or KakaoMap for directions; Google Maps is unreliable for driving in Korea.
- Carry a little cash for small shops and market stalls.
- Check the official site, tourandong.com, for the latest hours.
Summary
Walk the village in daylight, see it from above at sunset, then end on a glowing bridge: Andong is a gentle, atmospheric date for a late-autumn weekend.
