Want a romantic day out that doesn't mean a long trip? Gapyeong sits in the hills northeast of Seoul, roughly one to two hours away depending on how you travel. The classic plan pairs two very different moods: a daytime stroll among tall trees on Nami Island, then an evening of glowing lights at the Garden of Morning Calm, a mountain arboretum that turns into a winter light festival.
Quick facts
- From Seoul: about 1–2 hours to the Gapyeong area by train, bus or car
- Best order: Nami Island in the daytime, the arboretum after dark
- Sunset in late November / early December: around 17:10–17:20
- Dress: it gets properly cold in the mountains at night; bring hand warmers, gloves and a warm coat
- Best time: weekday evenings are far quieter than weekend sunsets
Day: Nami Island, a boat ride into the forest
The date starts the moment you board the boat. Nami Island is reached by a short ferry crossing, and the ticket price already includes the round trip. Inside, the best-known photo spot is the tree-lined path of metasequoias, with plenty of space to wander at your own pace.
- Admission: about 19,000 won at the gate, including the round-trip boat; buying online in advance is said to save 2,000 won or more
- Boat hours: usually 08:00–21:00, with the last boat at 21:30 on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays
- Parking: a lot near the wharf; small cars 6,000 won, card only
One thing that confuses navigation apps: the island's official address is in Chuncheon, but you board the boat at the Gapyeong wharf. Set Gapyeong Wharf (가평 선착장) as your destination, not the island.
Night: Garden of Morning Calm light festival
This is the main event of a Gapyeong winter date. The arboretum's gardens are covered with countless lights each winter, forming a glowing tunnel, a pond that reflects the lights, and a hilltop viewpoint. On calm, windless nights the pond reflections are especially pretty.
- Address: 432 Sumogwon-ro, Sangmyeon, Gapyeong (Korean: 경기 가평군 상면 수목원로 432)
- Phone: 1544-6703
- Season: last year the festival ran from December 5 to March 15; the 2026–27 dates were not yet announced when we checked
- Hours: lights come on around dusk
- Admission: the normal adult ticket is about 11,000 won
- Parking: free at the visitor lot, though there may be a wait on weekends
Because the festival's start date can shift, check the official website before you book transport. If the lights haven't opened yet, the arboretum is still worth a daytime visit, but the evening plan below is built around the festival.
Timing your sunset
In late November and early December the sun sets at roughly 17:10–17:20 in Gapyeong. A good rhythm is to leave Nami Island at around 15:30, catch the dusk colors on the drive, and arrive at the arboretum just as the lights switch on.
Without a car, a shuttle from Cheongpyeong Station to the arboretum has run in past seasons. If not, a taxi from the station is the usual fallback; ask your driver about the return ride in advance, since evening taxis can be hard to find in the mountains.
Dinner and cafés
Gapyeong is known for dakgalbi (spicy stir-fried chicken) and pine-nut dishes. An early dinner before the lights keeps the evening comfortable. On festival weekends restaurants and cafés near the arboretum fill up, so ask whether they take reservations.
A simple plan
- 11:00 – Board the boat to Nami Island and walk the metasequoia path
- 13:00 – Lunch on the island or near the wharf
- 15:30 – Leave the island and enjoy the sunset on the way
- 17:00 – Early dinner (dakgalbi or pine-nut dishes)
- 18:30 – Stroll the Garden of Morning Calm light festival
If you're staying the night, the Cheongpyeong or Gapyeong town areas are the most convenient bases for this route.
Tips for foreign travelers
- Use Naver Map or KakaoMap and show the Korean names to taxi drivers: 가평 선착장 (Gapyeong wharf), 남이섬, 아침고요수목원.
- Buy Nami Island tickets online ahead of time for a discount and shorter queues.
- Pay the Nami Island parking fee by card; cash is not accepted there.
- Pack hand warmers; the mountain evening is much colder than Seoul.
- Aim for a weekday evening if you can; weekend sunset is the busiest time at the festival.
- Confirm the festival's opening date before you go: morningcalm.co.kr or call 1544-6703. Nami Island: namisum.com.
Summary
Forest paths on Nami Island by day and a glowing garden by night: Gapyeong gives you two moods in a single day trip from Seoul. Just check the light festival's opening date before you set out.
