Suwon's Hwaseong Fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage site about an hour from Seoul by subway. With kids, the trick is to let the little Hwaseong Tour Train do the uphill parts, then explore the flat royal palace on foot.

Quick facts

  • From Seoul: Subway Line 1 or the Suin-Bundang Line to Suwon Station, then bus or taxi (about 1 hour total)
  • Time needed: half a day
  • Avoid Mondays: the tour train doesn't run

1. Hwaseong Tour Train

Since 2024 only the loop route runs: Yeonmudae → Hwahongmun → Janganmun → Hwaseomun → Maehyanggyo → Yeonmudae, about 20 minutes.

  • Boarding: Yeonmudae ticket office only (not sold at the palace)
  • Schedule: 09:40–17:00, every 20 minutes, no service 12:00–13:00; closed Mondays and in rain or snow
  • Fares: adults 6,000 won, teens 3,500 won, children 2,000 won; 6 and under free with an adult
  • Booking: online up to a month ahead; most seats go online. Collect your paper ticket at Yeonmudae at least 10 minutes before departure or lose it.

2. Hwaseong Haenggung Palace

King Jeongjo stayed in this temporary palace on royal visits. Its wide, flat courtyards are easy for small legs.

  • Hours: 09:00–18:00, open every day
  • Tickets: adults 2,000 won, children 1,000 won; combo ticket with two museums adults 4,000 won, children 1,000 won
  • Free day: last Wednesday of each month (November 25)
  • The evening opening ended on November 1, so plan a daytime visit.

3. Rainy or cold day: museums

The combo ticket covers the Suwon Hwaseong Museum and Suwon Museum. Older kids enjoy the fortress far more after seeing how it was built.

Strollers, parking and food

The fortress walls have slopes and stairs, so bring a baby carrier and stroll mainly inside the palace grounds. Public parking lots near the palace are the usual choice. Suwon is famous for its fried chicken street near the palace.

A half-day plan

  1. 10:00 Yeonmudae, tour train (book ahead)
  2. 10:30 Photos at Hwahongmun gate
  3. 11:30 Lunch
  4. 13:00 Hwaseong Haenggung
  5. 14:30 Hwaseong Museum, then home

Tips for foreign travelers

  • Bring warm layers; the walls are windy in November.
  • Ask your kids "Why did King Jeongjo build this fortress?" before you go. Looking for the answer keeps them walking.
  • Our Suwon destination page has more ideas and festival dates.

Summary

A tour-train loop around the fortress, a flat palace to explore and museums for bad weather: Suwon is one of the easiest half-day family trips from Seoul.
