In November, the reeds of Suncheon Bay in South Jeolla turn gold, and the mudflats are full of crabs and mudskippers to spot. Add the National Garden's children's zoo and a ride on the driverless SkyCube, and it's a full outdoor classroom for kids.
Quick facts
- Getting there: KTX from Seoul (Yongsan) to Suncheon, about 2h 40m, then bus or taxi
- Ticket: combined wetland + National Garden ticket, adults 15,000 won, teens 12,000 won, children 8,000 won (2026); 6 and under free with ID
- Closed: the last Monday of each month
1. Suncheon Bay Wetland boardwalks
- November hours: 08:00–18:00, tickets until 17:00
- Parking: cars 3,000 won
- The boardwalks are flat, so it's an easy walk with kids. There's no stroller rental, so bring your own.
2. National Garden Children's Zoo
Near the garden's West Gate, with fennec foxes, rabbits, monkeys, wetland birds and flamingos. The garden is huge, so focus on the area around the zoo. Hours and fees. Pets aren't allowed in the garden or wetland.
3. SkyCube and the eco boat
The wetland and the garden are about 7 km apart. The driverless SkyCube pod line connects them, and kids love it (fares). From Daedae Pier, an eco boat runs a 30-minute round trip: adults 7,000 won, teens 3,000 won, children 2,000 won (times vary; closed Mondays).
Food
Suncheon is known for kkomak (cockles). Cockle set meals in town cost around 20,000-something won per person.
A one-day plan
- 09:30 National Garden West Gate, children's zoo
- 12:00 Lunch
- 13:30 SkyCube or drive to the wetland
- 14:00–16:00 Boardwalks and the eco boat
- 16:30 Golden reeds at sunset if the kids still have energy
The climb to Yongsan Observatory takes almost an hour round trip, which is a lot for small children.
Tips for foreign travelers
- Sea wind is cold in November: pack windbreakers, hats and gloves.
- Bring small binoculars or a magnifying glass for spotting birds and crabs.
- Carry ID for free entry for under-7s (a passport works).
Summary
Golden reeds, mudflat creatures, a children's zoo and a pod ride: November is a wonderful time to show kids real nature at Suncheon Bay.
