Pocheon with Kids: Art Valley Lake, a Free Astronomy Museum & Herb Island Lights
Too far is tiring, staying home is a waste: for weekends like that, Pocheon is a quick drive from Seoul. This route covers an emerald lake and an astronomy museum by day, then a garden of lights after dark, with notes on what each age can enjoy.
Quick facts
- From Seoul: about an hour by car from northern Seoul; public transport is slow, so a car or taxi works best
- Avoid: the first Tuesday of the month (Art Valley) and Wednesdays (Herb Island)
- Best for: primary-school kids who like stars and space
1. Pocheon Art Valley: a quarry turned lake
An old granite quarry filled with water and became an emerald lake. Tell kids "this used to be a stone mountain" and watch their eyes go wide. The path is steep, so take the monorail; kids love that part.
- Address: 234 Artvalley-ro, Sinbuk-myeon (Korean: 경기 포천시 신북면 아트밸리로 234)
- Hours: weekdays and Sundays 09:00–18:00 (last entry 17:00); Saturdays 09:00–22:00 (last entry 20:00), winter Saturday nights
- Closed: first Tuesday of each month (monorail maintenance on Monday mornings)
- Admission: adults 5,000–6,000 won, children (7–12) 1,500–2,000 won, under 6 free
- Monorail round trip: adults 5,300–5,800 won, children 3,300–3,800 won
- Parking: free
2. Astronomy museum: free with your Art Valley ticket
The astronomy museum inside Art Valley costs nothing extra, and it doubles as a warm indoor break on cold, windy days. Best for early to upper primary kids. There is a nursing room on the first floor (ask at the info desk), but no stroller rental, changing table or high chairs as of April 2025.
- Hours: daily 09:30–17:30
- Fee: free with Art Valley admission; age 7 and under free
3. Herb Island: the garden of lights at dusk
When the sun goes down, the whole garden lights up. November sunsets come around 5:30 PM, so if you leave Art Valley in the late afternoon you arrive just as the lights come on. The only hours and prices we can find are from 2024, so check before you go.

Where to eat
Pocheon is famous for Idong galbi (marinated beef short ribs). Charcoal grills sit on the tables, so take care with very young children. Galbi restaurants with floor seating, high chairs or kids' menus.
A one-day plan
- 12:00 Lunch in Pocheon or near Art Valley
- 13:00 Art Valley and the monorail
- 14:30 Astronomy museum (indoor break)
- 16:30 Drive to Herb Island for the lights at dusk
- 18:30 Head home
Both are in Sinbuk-myeon and fairly close. With very young kids, Art Valley and the museum alone are plenty.
Tips for foreign travelers
- Renting a car? Bring an International Driving Permit. Use Naver Map or KakaoMap with the Korean address.
- It gets much colder after dark: pack down jackets and hand warmers for the light garden.
- A baby carrier beats a stroller on Art Valley's slopes.
Summary
A lake and star stories by day, a glowing garden at night. Pocheon fills a whole day close to Seoul.
