Everyone talks about Gyeongju in cherry blossom season. But if you ask locals, November is when this ancient Silla capital looks its best — and it's far less crowded.
The Korea Tourism Organization's 2026 foliage forecast puts the peak for the Gyeongsang region in early to mid-November. If you're planning a Korea trip this month, this guide covers the 5 best spots, a one-day route, how to get there from Seoul or Busan, and two local places to eat.
Quick facts
- Peak season: early–mid November 2026 (ginkgo turns from late October)
- From Seoul: KTX to Singyeongju Station, about 2 hours
- From Busan: under 1 hour by train or intercity bus — an easy day trip
- Getting around: the best foliage spots are outside the city center, so a taxi or rental car saves a lot of time
1. Ungok Seowon — a 370-year-old ginkgo tree
If you only have time for one photo spot, make it this one. A single giant ginkgo tree, said to be over 370 years old, covers the entire courtyard of this Confucian academy in yellow leaves.
It's much quieter than the downtown sights. You can sit on the wooden porch of the lecture hall and just watch the leaves fall.
- Address: 79-13 Saryang-gil, Gangdong-myeon, Gyeongju (Korean: 경북 경주시 강동면 사랴길 79-13)
- Admission & parking: free (about 80 car spaces)
- Best time: early November, weekday mornings
- Tip: public transport is very limited. Take a taxi from downtown or drive.
2. Tongiljeon Ginkgo Road — a golden tunnel
The road leading to Tongiljeon, on the east side of Namsan Mountain, is lined on both sides with ginkgo trees. Locals simply call it "the ginkgo road."
Don't just walk the road and leave. Climb up toward Tongiljeon hall and look back down — you'll see the yellow road stretching in a straight line.
- Location: entrance road to Tongiljeon, east of Namsan
- Best light: late afternoon, when the sun is behind the leaves
3. Oksan Seowon & Dongnakdang — a UNESCO valley walk
Oksan Seowon is part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing "Seowon, Korean Neo-Confucian Academies." The maple trees along the stream in front are the main draw, and the small wooden bridge is the classic photo point.
Follow the stream for 10–15 minutes and you'll reach Dongnakdang, where you can see the valley through a small latticed window. A one-minute drive away is the 13-story stone pagoda of Jeonghyesa Temple Site, surrounded by ginkgo trees.
4. Bulguksa Temple — now free to enter
Since May 2023, Korea has waived cultural heritage admission fees at temples like Bulguksa, so entry is now free. The foliage around the famous Cheongungyo and Baegungyo stone stairways is beautiful in November.
Because it's free, it gets busy. On weekends, try to arrive before 9 a.m. Local buses run from downtown Gyeongju.

5. Dori Village Ginkgo Forest — the hidden one
This is a forest of young ginkgo trees planted close together in a small mountain village. Unlike Ungok Seowon's single giant tree, here you walk between rows of golden trunks. During foliage season, villagers sometimes set up a small market.
One-day Gyeongju foliage route
The spots are split between the north (the seowon academies) and the south (Bulguksa and Tongiljeon). Here's how to group them:
- Morning: Bulguksa (arrive early) → Tongiljeon ginkgo road
- Lunch: downtown / Hwangnidan-gil area
- Afternoon: Ungok Seowon → Oksan Seowon and Dongnakdang walk
- Staying overnight? Add Dori Village on the second morning.
Where to eat
Gyori Gimbap (main branch) — Gyeongju's famous gimbap, packed with thick strips of egg. Opens early, so it's perfect before heading to Bulguksa.
- 2 Tapri 3-gil, Gyeongju (경북 경주시 탑리3길 2)
- Gimbap 2 rolls ₩11,000 / noodles ₩6,500
- Closed Wednesdays, weekdays 08:30–17:30
Hyanghwajeong — near Hwangnidan-gil, known for cockle bibimbap (kkomak bibimbap). There's usually a line.
- 17 Sajeong-ro 57beon-gil, Gyeongju (경북 경주시 사정로57번길 17)
- Cockle bibimbap for 2: ₩28,500
- Break time 15:00–17:00
Tips for foreign travelers
- Use Naver Map or KakaoMap, not Google Maps — walking and transit directions in Korea are much more accurate. Both have English menus.
- Copy the Korean address (we listed it above) and show it to taxi drivers.
- One rain = leaves gone. Ginkgo leaves drop fast after rain, so check the forecast.
- Pack a light down jacket. November mornings and evenings are cold.
- Driving? You'll need an International Driving Permit.
