The beach in November? Gangneung is quieter after summer, which makes it easier with children, and it's only about two hours from Seoul by KTX. This plan mixes indoor and outdoor stops so a windy day doesn't ruin the trip.
Quick facts
- From Seoul: KTX from Seoul Station, about 2 hours
- Weather: cold sea wind; pack hats and windproof jackets
- Bonus: 2026–2027 is "Visit Gangneung Year," with extra events around town
1. Gyeongpo Aquarium (rainy-day pick)
- Tickets: adults 20,000 won, teens 18,000 won, children (36 months to elementary) 16,000 won
- Hours: 10:00–18:00 (last entry 17:30), open every day
- Turtle and carp feeding costs 1,000 won each, a hit with toddlers.
2. Ojukheon House
The birthplace of scholar Yi I and his mother Shin Saimdang, who appear on Korea's 5,000- and 50,000-won notes. Show your kids the banknote and say "this is their house."
- Tickets: adults 3,000 won, children 1,000 won, 6 and under free · free parking
- Hours: 09:00–18:00 (tickets until 17:00)
- Address: 24 Yulgok-ro 3139beon-gil, Gangneung (Korean: 강원 강릉시 율곡로3139번길 24)
- Stroller rental and nursing room: check on arrival
3. Indoor art and science
Arte Museum Gangneung is an immersive light-and-media exhibition, open until 8 PM: adults 19,000 won, children 12,000 won. Chamsori Gramophone & Edison Science Museum displays antique phonographs and Edison inventions, great for elementary-age kids; adults 18,000 won, children 10,000 won, closed Tuesdays (hours).
4. Solhyang Arboretum (free, open at night)
A free pine-forest arboretum. From November to February it also opens 18:00–22:00 (entry until 21:00), lovely for an after-dinner walk. Closed Mondays.
Where to eat
Gangneung's Chodang sundubu (soft tofu made with seawater) is mild and perfect for kids. Chodang Tofu Village has many restaurants and parking. One example, Sonamujip Chodang Sundubu, opens 07:40–19:30 Wednesday–Sunday with a 15:30–17:00 break, closes early Monday and is closed Tuesday. Gangneung Jungang Market is great for snacks, with restrooms and parking.
A one-day plan
- 09:30 Ojukheon (quiet in the morning)
- 11:30 Soft tofu lunch in Chodang
- 13:00 Short Gyeongpo Beach walk, then the aquarium
- 15:30 Rest at the hotel
- 18:30 Dinner, then Solhyang Arboretum at night
On November 26–28, a free traditional performance festival takes place near the Gangneung Danoje center, with a kids' show on the 27th.
Tips for foreign travelers
- Gangneung Station to Gyeongpo is about 15 minutes by taxi.
- Mountain foliage in Gangwon peaks in late October; by mid-November, think pine forest walks rather than red leaves.
- Use KakaoT or Kakao Map to call taxis.
Summary
Ojukheon in the morning, soft tofu for lunch, the aquarium in the afternoon and a night walk in the arboretum. Go indoors when it's windy and walk the beach longer when it's sunny.
