Daejeon sits about an hour south of Seoul by KTX, and it's a great family stop on a cold or rainy day. You can pair a huge, mostly free science museum with a zoo and safari park, then finish at Sungsimdang, the bakery Koreans travel to Daejeon for.

Quick facts

  • From Seoul: KTX to Daejeon Station, about 1 hour
  • Ages: toddlers to elementary school
  • Avoid Mondays: the science museum is closed

1. National Science Museum (main halls free)

Science, natural history, human history, future technology and a children's science hall are all free. Dinosaur fans can spend hours in the natural history hall.

  • Address: 481 Daedeok-daero, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon (Korean: 대전 유성구 대덕대로 481)
  • Hours: 09:30–17:30 (tickets until 17:00); closed Mondays, Lunar New Year and Chuseok
  • Children's Science Hall sessions: 9:30, 13:00 and 15:30
  • Paid halls: Creative Narae Hall and the planetarium, adults 2,000 won, ages 4–19 1,000 won; a preschool-only play hall costs 1,000–2,000 won. Book online; walk-ups only get leftover slots.
  • Families: nursing room, stroller rental and changing tables in the Kids Plaza; food only in designated areas

2. Daejeon O-World: zoo, safari and rides

  • Hours (October): 09:30–18:00; safari 09:30–17:30 (November hours)
  • Entry: adults 17,000 won, teens 13,000 won, children 10,000 won; the safari costs extra (about 5,000 won in winter)
  • Free pass incl. safari: adults 34,000 won, teens 28,000 won, children 25,000 won
  • Parking: free, about 1,800 spaces · wagons allowed, kick scooters not
  • If your kids won't ride the attractions, entry + safari is cheaper than the free pass.

3. Sungsimdang: when to go

The main store opens around 8 AM and lines can start at 7. Weekday or Sunday afternoons are usually shorter. Twisted-donut-style twigim soboro and croquettes sit near the counter, so you can sometimes grab them without the long line.

A one-day plan

  1. 09:30 Science museum: first children's session and the natural history hall
  2. 12:00 Lunch
  3. 13:30 Drive to O-World (about 30 minutes); nap time in the car
  4. 14:00–17:00 Safari, zoo, rides if energy remains
  5. On the way home Sungsimdang for tomorrow's breakfast

On rainy days, just spend the whole day at the science museum.

Tips for foreign travelers

  • Use KakaoT for taxis between the museum, O-World and Daejeon Station.
  • Book the museum's paid halls on its official reservation site; use your browser's translate feature.
  • Sungsimdang has a branch inside Daejeon Station, handy before your KTX home.

Summary

Free science museum in the morning, O-World safari in the afternoon, Sungsimdang bread to finish. It's an all-weather family day an hour from Seoul.
